Dr Don Sparks, economist and 3-time Fulbright Scholar, becomes Director of the Office of Fellowships.

 

Summer 2010

Fellowships Preparation Seminar participants Ryan Adams, Anthony Garcia, Leland Hart, George Martin, and Jordan Panter join 22 other cadets as Star of the West International Summer Scholars pursuing independent study abroad on full grant.

 

May 2010

Dr Al Gurganus, retiring founding director of the Office of Fellowships, has been honored with the Friendship Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, presented by Constance Heery of the Atlanta consulate.

 

March 2010

Noah Koubenec, a Spanish and politics major, has been awarded a Harry S Truman Scholarship to study Latin American affairs in preparation for a career as a foreign service officer for the US Department of State.

 

January 2010

Civil and environmental engineering major Ryan Keiper has been named a finalist for a Fulbright Research Grant in water resource management to Tanzania.

 

Summer 2009

Fellowships Preparation Seminar participants Brian Burnley, Ryan DuBiel, Ryan Keiper, Noah Koubenec, and Natalie Obst, claim Star of the West International Summer Scholarships for study in Costa Rica, Spain, El Salvador, Mexico, and India, respectively.

 

April 2009

Dr Al Gurganus, director of the Office of Fellowships, has been appointed to a 3-year term on the Fulbright national screening committee for English language teaching assistantships in Germany.

 

John Marcus, a French and English major, and Julius Siler, a French and politics major have accepted French government awards to teach English in Montpellier and Grenoble, respectively. For more see http://externalaffairs.citadel.edu/french_govt_grants.

 

January 2009

The inaugural Fellowships Preparation Seminar is offered by the Office of Fellowships for highly qualified junior candidates for national and international scholarships. Five participants target graduate fellowships and draft project proposals in preparation for applications in the fall.

 

 

April 2008

Senior German and psychology major Tara Lee Woodside has been offered a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany for 2008-2009. Ms Woodside is the eighth German major or minor at The Citadel to apply successfully for a Fulbright since 2002.

 

March 2008
Senior French and history major John Daniel Lathers has been awarded a US Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to learn intermediate Turkish this summer at the American Research Institute in Ankara. (Summer 2007 he applied a Citadel Star of the West International Summer Scholarship to a course in elementary Turkish at Fatih University in Istanbul.) Mr Lathers has been admitted to the master's program at Johns Hopkins' Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, Italy.

 

August 2007
Professor Donald Sparks, former Fulbrighter and current Fellowships Point Faculty in the School of Business, has been named to the Fulbright Senior Specialist review panel for economics.
