Instructions for the Statistics Regression Project

1.  The write up on Pages 634-35 [Pp. 596-97 in 7th ed.] explains the data.  It seems that the number of cases actually is 209, not 106 as stated.

2.  Click HERE to read the condo data.

3.  To insert the data into an Excel worksheet,

     a. highlight the entire data set and Copy.

     b. In the Excel sheet paste the data

     c. Now you need to divide the data into six columns; use the Data tab and select Text to Columns

     d. You want fixed width; Excel will be able to figure out how you want the data split up.

4.  The data are as described in the text.  Now name the variables at the head of each column (You may need to insert a line for the names)

5.  To perform the regression, go to Tools/Data Analysis/Regression.  The dependent variable (the Y range) is the price data listed in column A.  Highlight the 209 prices.  Next enter the X range; this is all the rest of the data – the five columns from b to f.  Again highlight the 209 rows.  Have the output written to a new sheet.

6.  Now, on the sheet with the statistics, rename the variables in the column A.  Under Intercept (which is OK as is) type the names of the independent variables in place of X1 through X5.  Print out this sheet.

7.  Now interpret the output.  You just need to perform the five t-tests and an F-test as explained in class.  Also calculate the predicted price of unit 412, which was not furnished.
