2. Research the topic and prepare a 20 minute talk. Practice your talk to improve your presentation and timing.
3. Visual aids (maps, figures, tables, etc.) are required. The library can make B&W transparencies. You can then "doctor up" the transparencies with colored ink (use a Sharpie pen) and create an attractive visual aid. Kinko's can make color transparencies, but they cost more. 35 mm slides are also OK. Posters and "pass-arounds" don't work!
4.After you have prepared your presentation, write a summary abstract for distribution to the class. The abstract should be in outline form and no more than 2 pages in length. It must present an accurate condensation of your talk. That is, it must include your data and conclusions.....not just a statement of what you are going to talk about. List at least two recent references (other than your textbook).
5. IMPORTANT! The abstract is to be distributed to the class at the class period preceding the one at which the talk is to be presented. This will give us time to study it before your talk. Failure to do this will cause and deduction of at least one letter grade. You may distribute paper copies or email , provided that everyone receives it at least 2 days before the presentation. If you plan to attach a file to an email, be sure that you first save it as a text file (suffix ".txt") so that it will transmit and be read easily by the recipient.
6. IMPORTANT! The rest of the class is responsible for making active the discussion that follows the presentation. You must come to class on the day of the talk armed with three type-written questions regarding each abstract, which will be turned in to me at the beginning of class. I will use these questions to determine whether you are prepared, and to use in case the discussion starts to drag.
7. Your grade will be based on your abstract, your talk, and your participation in class discussion. You will be judged on the clarity of your presentation, as well as its content. Make sure your references are current... that is, that your information is up to date. Finish up with a good, concise statement of your conclusions. This makes the last impression and is most important!
8. Contact me early if you are having any problems. Don't wait until the last minute! Failure to deliver at the agreed upon time will result in a grade of ZERO. If we can reschedule, it will negate the zero, but will cost you one letter grade.
9. I am always open to suggestions. If you have any ideas
that you would like to explore with regard to the class, bring them up
and we will discuss them.
