SYLLABUS: GEOL-502 Introduction to Earth Science II
CLASS SCHEDULE

1. OBJECTIVE - To familiarize the student with the basic principles and vocabulary of astronomy,  oceanography, and meteorology  in order to convey an appreciation of the usefulness of these principles in making decisions concerning common human problems.

2. GOALS - The following topics will be mastered:
    Earth-sun relationships, earth-moon relationships, solar system, the sun:
    Ocean water, ocean floor sediments and bedrock, tides, waves, and currents;
    Atmospheric composition, structure, temperature, moisture, air pressure and wind, weather patterns and
        storms, climate .

4. TEXTBOOKS - Tarbuck and Lutgens, Earth Science. Always bring text to class. We frequently refer to figures and tables.

5. GRADES
Lecture Tests (60%): Lecture tests are scheduled and will include all materials covered in the text and the lecture. Take careful notes! Questions about slides, transparencies, and videos may occur on lecture tests.
Exam (40%): Comprehensive and will be taken at the scheduled time and place.

6. STANDING ASSIGNMENT - Monitor the news in the newspapers, magazines, and watch the news on TV. Bring to class hard copy (clippings or notes) on current events issues that are related to oceanography, meteorology, or astronomy. This will provide the basis for discussion and will make the course both relevant and interesting.
