Marbling of Paper

Procedure

1. The teacher prepares a tub full of carageenan solution (picture 3) and treated paper with alum solution (pictures 1 and 2).

2.Apply drops of dye to carageenan solution (picture 1) and comb (picture 3) to make various designs.

3. Refer to books and handouts for different designs.

4.Put paper on top of carageenan solutiion and pull out.

5.Wash the finished product with deionized water.

Observations

Some dyes seem to sink to the bottom of the carageenan solution alot.

Reflections

1. Do not rake the dye that drops to the bottom of the tub. Just leave it alone or you will have a big mess.

2. Make sure there are no air bubbles and that the paper is completely flat in the tub.
