Cadet Caleb Andrew Adkins was born in Mt. Pleasant. South Carolina. He is a senior private in Tango Company. Adkins has made the Dean’s List six times and received Gold Stars six times. When he was asked why he majored in English, Adkins replied, “To learn the language!”

Cadet Kyle C. Alexander of West Columbia, South Carolina has earned Dean List awards every semester he has been enrolled at The Citadel. He decided to major in English because Colonel Rembert told him to, and, as Alexander puts it, “Colonel Rembert is a very persuasive individual, whom I admire greatly.” After graduation, Alexander plans to attend graduate school. Andrew Allman
Cadet Andrew Allman from Fairfax, Virginia, is a Platoon Leader in Oscar Company. Allman recalls becoming an English major: “Col. Rembert was the most inspiring, interesting teacher I had taken at the time; until then I hated English.” Upon graduation, Allman intends to pursue a career in communications.

Cadet Gregory Artis from Fayette County, Georgia, is Athletic and Human Affairs Officer in November Company. He has earned Gold Stars once and Dean’s List five times. He decided to become an English major after he received a 52 on a political science test. After graduation, Artis plans on going to law school, serving in the Army’s AG corps for three years, and then starting his own law firm.

John Auer
Cadet John Ed Auer from Franklin, Tennessee, is the President of the Senior Class. He has earned two Dean’s List awards. Auer chose to major in English because he wanted to work on his communication skills. “The ability to write and speak correctly is desired in any field,” says Auer. He plans to go through the Marine Corps PLC ten-week program in the summer of 2007. Upon completion of his time in the USMC, Auer hopes to earn a Masters in Business Administration from a school close to his Nashville home.

Cadet Taylor Braithwaite from Aiken, South Carolina is the Regimental Provost Marshal. He has made the Dean’s List six times and earned Gold Stars twice. He is also a recipient of the SC LIFE Scholarship, a Citadel Foundation Leadership Scholarship, and the Col. T.N. Redd Scholarship. Braithwaite chose to major in English because he believes that literature has an immense capability to influence societal and personal philosophies and beliefs. By majoring in English, he intends to understand himself and the world around him better. Upon graduation, he plans to attend Law School at the University of South Carolina while pursuing a Navy or Marine Corps JAG commission.

Chris Cantey
Cadet Christopher N. Cantey is a Senior Private from Knoxville, Tennessee. Cantey chose to major in English because he enjoys literature, fiction especially. He feels that language, spoken or written word, is one of the most important developments of man. As CAntey says, "Having this ability and utilizing it to stimulate our minds to create mental images and sensations based on words alone is very exciting to me." He is very interested in law school; however, he has recently begun to consider advancing his English education and pursuing teaching at the university level. Cantey notes, "Writing fiction is also a dream of mine, though I feel the need to refine my skills through further education before pursuing writing as a permanent career."

Cadet George Brandon Fleetwood from Ashland, Virginia is a 2nd Lieutenant. He chose English because he believes the study of the language and its history can provide valuable insight in any area. After Graduation he plans to pursure a career in communications or human resources.

Cadet Daniel Aaron Hervig from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is the Golf Company Honor Representative. Hervig has made the Dean's List on six occasions and earned Gold Stars four times. He became an English Major because he enjoyed the way in which literature taught him a variety of lessons, lessons which ultimately helped him answer questions about himself. He has applied for a Marshall Scholarship to study in Belfast and Oxford after graduation. If he does not travel to the United Kingdom, Hervig plans to explore other alternatives for a year before attending law school.

Matthew Midgette
Cadet Matthew B Midgette from Newport News, Virginia is the Regimental Recruitting Officer. Midgette has earned a Dean's List Award once. He chose to major in English mostly because he loves to read and discuss literature. Midgette says, "As I've grown in my studies I've found the study to be rewarding not just in entertainment value, but on an intellectual level as well." Upon graduation, Midgette will attend Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Marine Aviator. He hopes the Marines will help pay for Graduate school, and perhaps a Ph.D later in life.
