James M. Hutchisson

Born in Washington, D.C., Jim Hutchisson received his Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in 1987. He was on the faculty of Washington and Jefferson College for two years before coming to The Citadel faculty in 1989.
Dr. Hutchisson has written widely on American and southern literatures with 7 books and more than 60 articles of literary and historical criticism and nonfiction to his credit. His most recent book, POE, earned starred reviews in major newspapers and a coveted spot in Boston Globe writer James Sallis's syndicated column, "The Reading Life."
In addition to serving as an officer in numerous scholarly organizations, including past chair of the American literature section of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, he is a contributing writer for Charleston magazine and other periodicals.
As an expert on the history and culture of Charleston, he has been interviewed by the BBC, ETV, and the Voice of America and has been featured in articles in newspapers and magazines ranging from the Washington Post to the Chronicle of Higher Education.
