Leader of College of Education that prepares more teachers (700 annually) than any other institution in Pennsylvania. Administer NCATE approved teacher education programs in early childhood education; elementary education; special education; counselor education; environmental education; reading; and in secondary education areas of biology, chemistry, communications, earth and space science, English, French, general science, German, Latin, mathematics, physics, Russian, social studies, and Spanish. Oversee the faculty and staff of a College of Education that generates more than 46,000 student credit hours annually and direct summer school offerings that have generated $390,000 in profit for the College of Education during the past four summers. Increased average class size in College from 20 to 24 over a 5 year period in collaboration with chairs and faculty

Reorganized College of Education into five comparably sized departments. Established graduate and undergraduate interdisciplinary councils to foster communication and collaboration between and among departments and programs. Created faculty technology center to assist faculty integrate instructional technology into their classes and programs. Established a Teacher Education Center to coordinate the placement of early childhood, elementary, special education, and secondary education student teachers and to function as a clearinghouse for inquiries about teacher education at WCU. Established Associate Dean's role as permanent management position and recruited a nationally recognized expert in authentic assessment for this new position.

Established urban/suburban school/university partnership focused on creating professional development schools characterized by graduate and undergraduate students working alongside university faculty and professional practitioners to enhance the educational opportunities for all children and youth. Created a funded P-16 Council described as a model by the Pennsylvania Academy for the Profession of Teaching. These partnerships contributed significantly to the $25,000,000 GEAR UP and Teacher Quality Enhancement grants received by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Assumed leadership role in the Greater Philadelphia P-16 Council and developed work plans providing more than $1,000,000 to develop literacy and mathematics professional development schools in Philadelphia. Worked collaboratively with Holy Family University, the Community College of Philadelphia, and Cheyney University as well as with School District of Philadelphia in this innovation urban initiative.

Assumed leaderhsip role in the Pennsylvania State System GEAR UP initiative focused on Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Serve as member of Scholarship Advisory Board for this Initiative. Took the lead in providing graduate level professional development offerings on-site for Philadelphia teachers from participating GEAR UP schools. Recruited and trained WCU undergraduates to tutor and mentor inner-city GEAR UP students. Conducted campus visits for several hundred inner city middle school students and organized a 3-day summer camp experience at WCU for 270 GEAR UP students.

Work closely with WCU Advancement Office to substantially increase scholarship endowments and unrestricted annual giving to the College of Education. Serve on Education Advisory Committee to the Honorable Lawrence H. Curry, Member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Created vision of teaching with technology resulting in almost 2 million dollars in federal and state grants. Contracted with area school districts to offer graduate professional development programs for teachers that generated more than a million extra dollars for College of Education.

Established within the College of Education an Institute for Educational Excellence and Entrepreneurship. Primary author and project director for Preparing Educational Entrepreneurs: A Curriculum Reform Initiative in Teacher Educaiton, one of 60 proposals (out of 1300 applications) fully funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE). Directing curriculum reform efforts at both undergraduate and graduate level so as to develop teacher candidates and practicing professionals into entrepreneurial educators - innovative change agents capable of and committed to changing the culture of schooling. Created very successful Summer Institute in Entrepreneurial Leadership to assist mid-career teachers and administrators in developing their own passionate ideas into business plans ready for implementation. Established an Entrepreneurial Education track for elementary education majors designed to foster the skills and attributes of the entrepreneur in future teachers.

Worked collaboratively with department chairs and school faculty to establish a budget reduction plan addressing a half million dollar shortfall in the $7,000,000 allocation for the College of Education.

Gained approval for and initiated planning for transfer of the graduate program in counseling - including faculty offices and classrooms - to the first floor of the Graduate Business Center, an offsite facility purchased by the College of Business and Public Affairs. Once the space is outfitted at a cost of $700,000 fully funded by the College of Education, this state of the art teaching facility will reduce the extreme overcrowding off both classroom and office space in Recitation Hall. In addition, this arrangement will generate an additional profit of approximately $250,000 per year for the College of Education.

Director of University of North Carolina at Greensboro's (UNCG) Teachers Academy, an innovative structure designed to enhance a university-wide approach to teacher education.

Took the lead in implementing this new structure. During 94/95 academic year coordinated preparation for NCATE and SDPI continuing accreditation review. Organized site visit for NCATE BOE in November of 1996. BOE report and ruling by UAB cleared UNCG of 10 weaknesses cited in 1991 and identified no new weaknesses. Coordinated UNCG's implementation of "Spangler Initiative," a system-wide mandate to integrate instructional technology into teacher education programs.

Established multiculturalism as the focus for Teachers Academy's activities. Received mini-grant from Multicultural Education Infusion Center based at San Diego State University and a UNCG Advancement of Curriculum and Teaching Grant to establish a faculty reading group focused on multiculturalism. In conjunction with these efforts conducted annual community conferences focusing on contemporary issues in teacher education featuring as keynote speakers: Nel Noddings, Lee Shulman, and Ann Lieberman. Employing a "town meeting" format, these conferences involved higher education faculty, area school teachers, state politicians, and community leaders in serious discussions of the future of teacher education.

Responsible for planning and organizing a two-day overnight retreat to conceptualize this new collaborative involving 5 area IHEs, local school districts, and the San Antonio business community. This retreat of 65 people produced the Center for Education Development and Excellence, one of 8 centers established by the State and recipient of a 1.9 million-dollar grant from the Texas Education Agency.
