Policies and Procedures

• Any CSI student can open a banking account with The Citadel Treasurer’s Office for $1.
• Some useful information about the Treasurer’s Office:
  • Hours: 9 am – 4 pm on Monday through Friday; closed from 12 noon – 12:30 pm.
  • They will issue Citadel checks at no charge. However, you must go to their office each time you want a check for something so they can fill out and sign each check.
  • They will cash checks for 10¢ per check.
  • They do not have a banking card or ATM machine, so you will be unable to get money from them when they are closed.

• The second on-campus banking option is to use South Carolina Federal.
• A SC Federal ATM machine is located in Mark Clark Hall, which is convenient for getting money after hours or on the weekend.
• A SC Federal branch is located downtown, approximately 10 minutes from campus; however, please keep in mind that students will not be allowed to leave campus during the week, so access to the bank branch will be limited to Friday afternoons. The branch’s hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am – 5:30 pm.

• Each CSI student is assigned a Citadel post office box. This serves as the student’s mailing address while at The Citadel during CSI and thereafter.
• Students are notified of their mailbox assignment on the first day of CSI and receive their mailbox keys on the second day of CSI.
• Any student who loses his/her mailbox key will be charged $10 for a replacement key. You will not be able to access your mail without a mailbox key.

• Students who want to use the phone line in their barracks room must supply their own telephone.
• All local calls are free from the barracks, but long distance calls require a phone card.
• CSI students are only permitted to use their phones during designated “free time” periods.

• Studentsare allowed to bring cell phones with them to CSI; however, strict rules concerning the use of cell phones will be enforced.
• Students are only allowed to use their phones during designated “free time” periods in the barracks.
• CSI students are not allowed to take their cell phones to class or to use them anywhere on campus other than the barracks. All cell phones must be locked up in the student’s lockbox when not in use.
• Violation of the cell phone policy will result in the student’s phone being confiscated by CSI staff, in addition to loss of points in accordance with the accountability system.

• The Citadel provides access to networked computers in numerous computer labs on campus, including several labs in the library and the barracks. More information on computing at The Citadel is available at http://www.citadel.edu/computing/
• CSI students are allowed to bring a personal computer to CSI; however neither the CSI program nor The Citadel is liable for loss of or damage to any student’s computer.

• Each CSI student is assigned a Citadel e-mail address. This serves as the student’s e-mail address while at The Citadel for CSI and thereafter.
• CSI students are required to check their Citadel e-mail account daily because information and announcements will be e-mailed on a regular basis.
• Past experience suggests that e-mail is also a successful way for family and friends to keep in touch with CSI students. Due to their busy schedules, it can be difficult for CSI students to talk on the telephone at times that are convenient for their friends and family, but they are able to respond to e-mail during their free time.

• All CSI students attend a computing workshop during the CSI session to introduce them to the computing environment at The Citadel.
• Each student also takes the Computer Competency Exam, which must be passed with 80% proficiency before the end of the session. The workshop and exam cover basic computing abilities.

• Citadel cadets (including summer school students, CSI staff members, or any other Citadel students) are prohibited from dating or attempting to date students in the CSI summer program. Likewise, CSI students are prohibited from dating or attempting to date Citadel cadets.
• In addition, there will be no unsupervised interaction between Citadel cadets and CSI students at any time during the CSI program.
• Situations in which a CSI student is related to a current Citadel cadet will be handled on a case-by-case basis. However, in general, the “no interaction” policy will be observed on campus regardless of any pre-existing relationship between the students.

• CSI students are encouraged to socialize and form friendships with their CSI classmates.
• However, all students are encouraged to remember that the primary goal of attending CSI is to prepare for knob year academically, physically, and mentally. Personal relationships between students should promote this goal, rather than impede it.

• If a CSI student forgets to bring an item or runs out of something during the week, s/he may make purchases at the Cadet Store or Gift Shop on campus.
• Access to the Cadet Store and Gift Shop will be available during the students’ free time in the morning (9:50 – 10:15 am) and in the afternoon (1 – 1:30 pm).

• Trips to off-campus stores will be limited to the weekends, as CSI students may not leave campus during the week.
• A Wal-Mart and other shopping facilities are located approximately 20 minutes from campus, and CSI staff members will gladly provide directions or help the student to locate public transportation to any local facilities.

• Family members or friends who need to drop an item off for their CSI student can contact the CSI Coordinator to make arrangements to drop the item off at 135 Thompson Hall.
• No student will be allowed to leave a mandatory activity to pick up a delivery.
• Deliveries can also be mailed to the student’s Citadel address, which will be provided to family members upon check-in at CSI.

• All CSI students will be housed on the third and fourth floor of Padgett Thomas Barracks.
• Each CSI student will be living with one roommate in a double room or two roommates in a triple room. Any student whose roommate leaves the program will be assigned a new roommate.
• Citadel summer school students will be housed in the same barracks, but not the same section. There will be no unsupervised interaction between summer school students and CSI students.

• CSI staff will live in rooms adjacent to CSI students and will provide supervision.
• The barracks are under the authority of The Citadel Commandant’s Department. CSI students are subject to all the rules and regulations set forth by this department for individuals residing in the barracks. In addition to the CSI staff, CSI students are also supervised by the TAC officers assigned to Padgett Thomas Barracks by the Commandant’s department.

• Gender segregation will be observed in the barracks. No student will share a room with an opposite gender student, and male and female restroom facilities will be separate and clearly marked.
• Male and female students are allowed in each others’ barracks rooms, but the door must be open whenever students of the opposite gender are in a room together.
• Opposite gender students and staff are required to knock and wait for an “all clear” signal before entering any barracks room.

• There is no laundry service at The Citadel during the summer. However, coin-operated washers and dryers are available on campus.
• Access to laundry facilities is limited to the weekend due to time constraints. Thus, students must bring enough clothing to last them at least one week.
• Students who plan to do laundry on campus will need to bring laundry detergent and cash.
• In addition, students should be prepared to deal with a lot of sweaty/damp clothing that will result from the physical activity that occurs during CSI. Students are advised to bring plenty of extra clothing items (especially things like socks, underwear, t-shirts, etc.) in order to avoid re-wearing dirty clothes.

• Students who take prescription medications are required to store their medication in its original container with the label intact.
• Students who bring over-the-counter medications to CSI are also required to store the medication in its original container with the label intact.
• All medications must be stored locked in the student’s lockbox when they are not in use.
• It is the student’s responsibility to manage his/her own medications. Neither the infirmary nor the CSI staff are responsible for administering daily medications.
• Students who have medical conditions that may require emergency administration of medication (e.g., asthma, allergies to bee stings, etc.) must ensure that they have the appropriate medication in their possession and must provide all relevant emergency information on their emergency contact card, which will be completed at the welcome dinner.

• The Citadel has an on-campus storage facility that CSI students may use at no charge.

• Each student may store up to two (2) standard boxes, one (1) footlocker, and one (1) suitcase. Standard size boxes are 24”x17”x22” and are available for purchase in the Cadet Store.
• Bicycles, refrigerators, and surfboards cannot be stored. Fans, stereos, computers, and laundry bags can only be stored if they are packed inside a standard box.
• All boxes must be taped shut and suitcases and footlockers must be closed and secured. All stored items must be clearly labeled with the student’s name.

• Please note that all stored items must be dropped off and picked up on weekdays between 8am - 4pm.
• CSI staff will not be responsible for storing boxes for CSI students, and students may not leave any items in the barracks after check-out.

• CSI students are allowed to bring vehicles to campus during CSI.
• Each student who brings a vehicle must register it through CSI and pay a $38 on-campus parking fee.
• Use of vehicles by CSI students is restricted to the weekends (Friday afternoon – Sunday evening).

• Students who do not bring vehicles to CSI have other transportation options.
• The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) provides bus service throughout the greater Charleston area. There is a CARTA bus stop directly outside The Citadel’s main gate. For more information, please go to http://www.ridecarta.com or call 843-724-7420.
• In addition, several taxi companies serve the Charleston area. Staff can provide contact information for these companies upon request.

• Per The Citadel’s Summer School Regulations, “The barracks are off-limits except to boarding students and to those who are authorized by the Commandant of Cadets or other proper authority.” Valid Citadel identification will be required to enter the barracks.
• Family and friends of Citadel students are welcome to visit campus during the weekend but will not be allowed into the barracks.
• The only exceptions to this policy are the first and last days of CSI. Family and friends of CSI students will be allowed to enter the barracks to help the students move in and out.
