The
Citadel - Computing Policy:
Technical
Assistance Policy:
ITS technical support for hardware or software problems
is limited to Citadel-owned computers (faculty and staff office computers)
or Dell computers, purchased from Dell, owned by cadets
living in the barracks at The Citadel.
If you bring a different brand of PC, or if you purchase
a Dell from a retail vendor (like Best Buy, Sam's Club, etc.) we will
supply you with a network connection; but, you must abide by the technical
assistance policy you purchased with the PC to get support if it breaks.
Dell has specific, signed contracts with each of these vendors which prohibits
us from servicing those computers.
All ITS computer labs are equipped with Gateway or Dell PCs and access
to academic software. Many lab computers are available 24 hours, 7 days-a-week
and you should complete your academic coursework from a lab while your
PC is being serviced.
For the duration of a cadet's residence in the barracks,
technicians will reinstall supported
software and provide technical support to repair a Dell computer provided
it was 1) purchased directly from Dell, 2) has the original case, 3) has
the appropriate proof-of-purchase software licensing documentation, and
4) original program files.
A technician cannot reinstall Microsoft Windows or any application software
(including Microsoft Office) without appropriate license information and
actual software. Many software applications require specific installation
codes and original program files on CD-ROM to be reinstalled. Consider
bringing the software (or a backup copy) to keep locked in your lock-box,
or package it so your parents can send it to you in the event your computer's
hard drive fails. You are responsible for your computer, accounts, and
the security of your software. Be aware of The Citadel's Computing
Policy and rules regarding use of the Citadel's network, equipment,
email, or other systems, and unlicensed software. ITS does not reinstall
games or other non-standard software.
Cadets may use desktop printers; however, ITS does not support
desktop printers or troubleshoot problems with these printers. Network
printing is available in each barracks and cadets are responsible for
using this equipment properly to ensure it is not abused.
Connect
your computer to the network and install virus-protection
To connect your computer to The Citadel's network, cadets will need a
Citadel ID number and PAWS PIN. Simply set up your computer, plug in the
network cable supplied by ITS (these can be picked up in a barracks guard
shack or Bond 254), then launch your Internet Explorer browser and follow
the instructions on the screen to use the Bradford Management System.
Your computer will be scanned for viruses and spyware and you'll be installing
Citadel-Supported Virus-protection software with the latest updated definition
files. This process may take up to 2 hours to complete. ITS technicians
will not install software on Linux, Macintosh or iMAC computers.
