2010 Commencement Week activities get under way today

Commencement Week activities get under way Thursday, May 6 at The Citadel and continue through Sunday, May 9. Among the events planned are the Star of the West drill competition, awards convocation, military commissioning ceremonies and the Class of 2010 Long Gray Line graduation parade.

The South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8 in McAlister Field House. CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer will deliver the commencement address.

Seating and parking is reserved for media organizations wishing to cover the Corps of Cadets commencement on Saturday. A campus map with directions to the parking area and the media entrance to the field house for this commencement are available. PDF map

The Citadel Graduate College will hold its commencement at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9 in the

field house. Mike Veeck, co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs, is the commencement speaker. Seating and parking are open during the Graduate College commencement. You may enter the field house on Sunday via the main entrances of the field house.

In addition to the commencements, here are other activities taking place beginning today that provide good photo and video opportunities.

Thursday, May 6
11 a.m. - Star of the West Competition for the best drilled cadet, Summerall Field
2 p.m. - Awards Convocation, McAlister Field House
5:30 p.m. - Baccalaureate Service, Summerall Chapel. The speaker is retired four-star Army Gen. William H. Hartzog, chief executive officer at the Burdeshaw Associates and member of The Citadel Class of 1963.

Friday, May 7
2:15 p.m. - 2011 Summerall Guards perform in honor of the Class of 2010, Summerall Field
3 p.m. - Class of 2010 Long Gray Line Parade, Summerall Field
