BRIGADIER GENERAL
JAMES E. MACE
United States Army (Retired)
Brigadier General James E. Mace,
a native of Hampton, South Carolina, graduated from The Citadel and was commissioned
in the Infantry in 1963. He attended the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the
Armor Officer Advanced Course, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College,
the Army War College, the Advanced Management Program at Rutgers University
and the Leadership Development Program at the University of Maryland. He has
a masters degree in Education from The Citadel and an MBA from Webster University.
General Mace's numerous command
and staff assignments include battalion operations officer with the 82d Airborne
Division, advisor to a Republic of Vietnam airborne infantry battalion in Vietnam;
basic combat training company commander and brigade personnel officer at Fort
Jackson, South Carolina; infantry company commander and brigade operations officer
with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam; ROTC duty and Tactical Officer at
The Citadel, chief of the editorial branch in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, executive
officer and action officer for the Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations
at the pentagon; brigade operations officer, battalion executive officer, and
Inspector General with the 82d Airborne Division; Commander of the 3d Battalion,
5th Infantry in Panama; and Commander of the 2d Battalion (Ranger) 75th Infantry
at Fort Lewis, Washington. General Mace also commanded the 1st Infantry Training
Brigade and the Ranger Training Brigade at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was an
assistant Division Commander for Support of the 6th Infantry Division in Alaska
and was the Chief of Staff of Fourth U. S. Army at Fort Sheridan, Illinois upon
his retirement from the Army.
One of the most decorated graduates
that The Citadel has ever had for valor in combat, General Mace has been awarded
the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver
Star, the Legion of Merit, with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with "V" device
and four oak leaf clusters, the Joint service Commendation Medal, the Meritorious
Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters,
the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation medal with "V" device and four oak
leaf clusters. General Mace also wears the Ranger Tab and the Master Parachutist
Badge. His regimental affiliation is with the 75th Infantry Regiment
(Ranger).
General Mace resides at The Citadel
in Charleston, South Carolina where he is the Commandant of Cadets. He is married
to the former Frances Anne Jamison. The Maces have four children: Beth Anne
(a North Georgia Military College graduate who is married to a Navy fighter
pilot), Mary Frances (a West Point graduate married to a West Point classmate),
Nancy Ruth (�99 graduate of The Citadel, who is attending graduate school at
the University of Georgia) and James Jr. ( a West Point graduate, who is attending
the Medical University of South Carolina). He is Chairman of the Board for the
South Carolina Federal Credit Union (the sixth biggest financial institution
in the state) and President of the Palmetto Hunt Club.
