Randy Deitering Lecture (5:30 PM)
•November 8th – Bond Hall Room 165 at 6:30pm
“US Intelligence Analysis: Changes, Challenges and Transformation”
Deitering has more than three decades of experience in U.S. national security and intelligence, including 15 consecutive years on the White House Staff. He served with the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board during the Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. Before his service at the White House, Deitering spent more than a decade at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as an analyst and operations officer.
He will be here examining the ever-evolving forces--internal as well as external--that are recasting and re-forging the tradecraft of intelligence analysis.

Checkpoint Charlie Foundation Director Speaking Nov. 12 (5:30 PM)
The History Department and the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures will host Andrea Mehrländer, executive director of the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation in Berlin, Germany, on Nov. 12.
Mehrländer will discuss the Germans of Charleston during the Civil War at 6:30 p.m. in Bond Hall Room 165. The talk will be in English and is free and open to the public.
Mehrländer specializes in 19th Century North-American History, and conducted her main research on German immigration history in the South, the American Civil War and slavery. She is the author of several books including her recent study: "The Germans of Charleston, Richmond and the New Orleans During the Civil War Period, 1850 - 1870: A Study and Research Compendium"
The Checkpoint Charlie Foundation promotes and organizes programs that foster and maintain German-American relations.

Dr. Muravchik is currently an adjunct Professor at the Institute for World Politics and a fellow at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of John Hopkins University. He was formerly Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and a Fellow in Residence at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and Executive Director of the Coalition for a Democratic Majority. He served on the Maryland State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil rights from 1985 to 1997 and was a member of the Commission on Broadcasting to the People’s Republic of China in 1992. He is also an editorial board member of World Affairs and Journal of Democracy
