Goals of the course: To give students an understanding of biology and its relevance in their lives.
Textbook: Audesirk, Audesirk and Byers; Biology: Life on Earth (6th edition). The textbook is required and you will do better in the class if you keep up with the reading assignments. The CD-ROM is also a useful study tool.
Grading: Your grade will be based on 6 hourly exams (100 points each) and a comprehensive final exam (100 points). The exam dates are indicated on the class and exam schedule. Make-up exams will only be given if: 1) an athletic, religious, or other activity means you will be off-campus during the exam time, in which case you must make arrangements in advance; 2) you are ill at the time of the exam, in which case you will need to bring verification from the infirmary before the make-up will be granted; or 3) an emergency makes you miss the exam, in which case you must have some proof of the emergency. Guard duty is not an acceptable reason to miss an exam. Make-up exams must be completed within one week of the original scheduled date.
You will also have several opportunities to gain points on voluntary assignments during the semester.
Final letter grades will be assigned as follows: A = 90-100% (630-700 points); B = 80-89% (560-629 points); C = 70-79% (490-559 points); D = 60-69% (420-489 points); F = 59% or less (419 or fewer points)
Attendance: According to Citadel policy, class attendance takes priority over all other normal activities. Citadel policy allows instructors to give a grade of “F” if absences exceed 20% of the total class meetings. For this class that means that if you have more than 8 absences you will fail the class no matter what your performance on the exams and assignments actually is. Excused absences will not count against you, but unexcused ones will. The only way that I will know if an absence is excused is if you tell me in advance. I will pass around a class roster for you to initial each day, and this will be the official attendance record. Tampering with the roster is a violation of the honor code.
Honor system: We are all expected to adhere to The Citadel’s honor system, and I will operate under the assumption that we are until shown otherwise.
