Foreign Language Offerings and Requirements:

  • Students must take four semesters in the same language (for all majors except Engineering and Education).
  • Engineering and Education cadets may also take the Placement Exam to earn foreign language credit for courses not taken.
  • The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers four languages to fulfill the core requirement: French, German,Spanish, and Chinese (Asian Studies).
  • If students wish to continue with the same language that they studied in high school, they must take the Citadel’s Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE).
  • The score will determine the placement level (101, 102, 201, 201, etc.) for a student's foreign language study at The Citadel.

Students should do their best on this exam because 3.0 credit hours will be awarded for each course a student exempts. For example, if students are placed into a 201 class in French, German, or Spanish, (provided that they earn a grade of C or better in the 201 course when they take it), they will receive 6.0 semester hours' credit for the two exempted courses.

For those students who would like to begin a new language—one not previously studied—they will need to request a waiver from the Placement Test by writing to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
