Thanks for serving our great country!

War is the great school both for acquiring and
exercising this species of magnanimity. Death,
as we say, is the king of terrors; and the man
who has conquered the fear of death, is not
likely to lose his presence of mind at the
approach of any other natural evil. In war, men
become Familiar with death, and are thereby
necessarily cured of that superstitious horror
with which it is viewed by the weak and
unexperienced. They consider it merely as the
loss of life, and as no further the object of
aversion than as life may happen to be that of
desire. They learn from experience, too, that
many seemingly great dangers are not so great as
they appear; and that, with courage, activity,
and presence of mind, there is often a good
 probability of extricating themselves with
honour from situations where at first they could
see no hope. The dread of death is thus greatly
diminished; and the confidence or hope of
escaping it, augmented. They learn to expose
themselves to danger with less reluctance. They
are less anxious to get out of it, and less apt
to lose their presence of mind while they are in
it. It is this habitual contempt of danger and
death which ennobles the profession of a
soldier, and bestows upon it, in the natural
apprehensions of mankind, a rank and dignity
superior to that of any other profession. The
skilful and successful exercise of this
profession, in the service of their country,
seems to have constituted the most
distinguishing feature in the character of the
favourite heroes of all ages.Adam Smith, The
 Theory of Moral Sentiments

There is not a day that goes by that I do not
think about the many Citadel alumni that are
currently going in harms way. Remember you are
following thousands of alumni that went before
you and thousands that will probably follow you.
You have not been forgotten and are in the
thoughts of your fellow Citadel men and women.
May God bless you and keep you safe until you
are able to return to your loved ones.

Thank you, Citadel men and women, past, present
and future, for your service to our country.
While freedom is not free, you have freely given
up your lives for others, most whom you will
never know. It seems so little in return, but
thank you for giving up your life to protect
 ours.

no better way to descibe those who serve than

I look at my children every day and I realize
that without you fighting for our freedoms, my
family could not do the things we do and enjoy
life the way it is meant to be lived. Rest
assured my children know this, too. We all know
their future is dependent upon men and women
like you who sacrifice, who give so much that a
mere "thank you" is insufficient. Then again,
there are no words that can adequately sum up
our gratitude. May God bless you and, wherever
you are in the world, may he bring you home in
 safety and peace.

Fellow Bulldogs,

As I eat Thanksgiving dinner with my family,
I thought about why we are able to celebrate our
abundant life. It is because of our military
and their readiness to stand up to defend our
 great nation.

Without our military, we would not have the
opportunity to continue our way of life. For
that I am very grateful and thankful.

To all of you who ensure my freedoms, past
and present, Thank You and May God Bless you and
 your families.

Dear Citadel Heroes,

eating turkey with everyone in the mess hall.
Please know that there are those of us who are
thinking of you at this time, and are so very
grateful for your service to our country. You
are keeping watch while we sleep. We continue to
pray that you will stay safe and come home soon.
 You are not forgotten.

To all you wonderful men/women of the Armed
Forces. Today marks another very sad day for
our country. But our resilience as a Nation has
come out loud and clear. From the office worker
, to the grounds keeper, people of every walk of
life, every nationality. We all came together to
try to help put the spirits and souls of
Americans back on track. Especially you folks,
you are seeing the front of the front lines in
our defence of this country. With out you, and
all those that have gone before you in the Armed
Forces, we would not have the freedom or the
privilidges we as a Nation have today. Thank
you all so very much for defending all of us.
You make all of us Americans proud to be
Americans. Thank you again from the bottom of
 our hearts.

I salute you! So many times I find myself wishing
 I had joined so
that I might serve at your side for our great
country. My path is that of
international business where I do my best to
represent the face of a free America
in the world of commerce. During my many airport
 layovers, I find myself
admiring those of you passing through the
airports in uniform heading out on deployment,
 coming home for RAR, or
returning home. When I see you, I thank you, buy
you a drink, lend you my cell phone,
or simply nod my head in your honor. I hope all
Americans are doing at least these simple
gestures to show you how much we appreciate your
 service and sacrifice. My father
served as a marine officer in Viet Nam and I want
you to know, if you don't already,
that the attitude of Americans toward you and
your efforts is night and day compared to
that event. You are honored, appreciated,
respected, and revered as the epitomy of
true American patriots! We salute you!
I look forward to the day I see you in the
airport so that I can buy you a drink! God bless!

Citadel Brothers and Sisters,
Again our nation calls. Once again Cid grads
 answer the call.

Your are among the heros from the past. Your
place in history will forever be solidified by
your answering the call. Like all great alumi
before you, you will carry the banner of pride,
 service and honor.
God Bless you. I am honored to be called a
 fellow alumi.
Stay Safe. I will continue to pray for ALL of
 your safe return.

My husband, a 2003 graduate (GOLF COMPANY), of
the Citadel left last week to go fight the war
in Iraq. It has made me realize how much the
Citadel has instilled in the men and women of
today and how much confidence he has and will
return here a stronger person. To all the
families of deployed loved ones, the power of
pray works wonders and stay focused and positive
and know that they all will be home soon.
Continue the good work guys and families and
friends continue to show your support. They are
in God's hands now and he will bring them all
 home safely!

Tonight I am hearing the news of
Saddam's Capture. After Graduating from
The Citadel, I spent eleven years
deploying to the Middle East monitoring
the No Fly Zones, flying against the
Taliban and Al Qaeda and finally fighting
the Iraqis. Although I left Kuwait 8
months ago, my thoughts and prayers
have often been with our forces still in
harm's way.

To all the Grads deployed and others who
serve - we salute you. You made this
happen, and we are proud of you.
Stay safe. Complete the Mission.
Come Home soon.

My fiancee is Lt. Jay Sheets from Oscar company
 class of '01.
It is so hard to not be selfish at a time like
 this.
I'm so proud of him and all those who serve but
all one thinks about is his safe return as soon
 as possible.
He has been through so much and seen a lot, some
things that I can not even imagine.
I thank the Citadel for preparing him for
 situations such as this.
He has learned to be strong, diligent and
 mentally tough.
We were both glad to hear of Chad's safe return
and hope the same for everyone else.
Way to go Chad, I was so proud to hear that you
partook in the toppling of Saddams statue.

You really start to look at life in a new light
when something so precious to you is in harm's
 way.
Our hearts go out to Lt. Childers' family, Jay
was very saddened at the news as was I.
It is so wonderful to see the strong bonds of
brotherhood come together at times like these to
support one another and their families.
I want to thank those who have kept in touch with
me and looked out for me while Jay has been
gone, that means more to us than you will ever
 know.
Jay runs into classmates from time to time in
Iraq and it always brightens up his day to see
 familiar, friendly faces.
I am so appreciative of all that the Citadel has
given him not only an education and military
training but friendships that will last a
 lifetime.
Thank you again to all those who serve. I pray
for the families who have lost loves ones and
pray for everyone else's safe return.

Sincerely,
 Valerie Brandt

I just wanted to say Thank-You for all youve done
to keep me safe so that when I walk out of my house
everyday I dont have to see people getting shot

like showing their ankles or something even
more stupid. We live in a free country and
its because people like you put your lives on the
line to keep children, families, elders, animals,
teenagers, and the list goes on safe and out of
harms way. And I do hope someday when I join either a
military branch or CIA I will be able to somehow
repay the favor you have so kindly put towards me.

To all of the families and friends of Citadel
Grads serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and
 anywhere else they serve.
My husband (Greg Bailey 87) taught me before we
were married about "the whole man." I am proud
and pray daily for those men and women who serve
their God, their Country, their Familie and
their school on whatever battlefield to which
they have been assigned. On the day the war
began my husband began to dress for work as a
hospital chaplain and in choosing his tie he
chose his Citadel tartan tie. As a veteran of
the last Gulf War I know that was his way of
"being there" once again with his troops and his
schoolmates. May we always remember the
personal sacrifices made everyday to secure our
freedoms. God Bless America and the citizen
soldiers that make her who she is...

Although not a Citadel grad,
I still want to add my sincere support
to those brave men and women who have,
once again, been called to serve their
nation in time of war.
As in times past, they have
answered this call with resolve,
courage and loyalty.
Every American should take a full
measure of pride in these wonderful
people and thank God that they are
there for us when we need them.
May they return quickly and safely
and may our losses be as minimal as
possible.
To the families of those lost in the
war, I can say very little to salve
their grief, except that, as an
American, I would tell them that the
sacrifices of their loved ones is
sincerely appreciated and their sadness
and loss is shared by all of us who
love America and those who defend her.

I dont know who wrote this poem,
but it has stuck with me since i was
in high school.

The muffled drums sad roll has beat
    This soldier's last tattoo.
No more on life's parade shall meet
    These brave and fallen few.

    On Fame's eternal camping ground
    Their silent tents are spread.
And glory guards in silent round
In the bivouac of the dead.

I know that all our men who have given
their lives are with the lord now.
May God keep our soldiers, sailors,
airmen, and marines safe and send them
to victory.

Dear Brothers,
I wish all well, and a quick return home. I
look over the list of alumni who are serving,
and it is more than black and white names on a
webpage. It is faces, voices, and memories of
people who I have the great pleasure to have
known. I see roommates, classmates, and
 companymates.
It has become all too real to think that just a
few short years ago we stood shoulder to
shoulder with our chins in and bracing for our
lives from the tyranny of evil upperclassmen.
Now you are all out there shoulder to shoulder
bracing for all of us against the tyranny of an

To all our fellow alumni serving in Iraq, my
prayers are with each of you for the noble
sacrifice your are making to eliminate evil from
this world and secure a safer tomorrow for our
country. Just remember, despite what the media
portrays, America is behind you all the way.
We in the States, in our cozy homes, performing
our cozy jobs, deep down feel incomplete because
you all are over there in the heat of battle
while we watch from images projected to us.
Remember, you are performing the most dutiful
function a man can perform; as the words of the
Great General Robert E. Lee, which formerly
resided in the Salley Port of PAdgett-Thomas

 English Language."
You, fellow alumni, are performing that "Duty."
May God protect you all, and grant you safe

To All Who Serve:
Many people in the USA have many thoughts
on why we are at war with Iraq and many
are voicing their views here with no concern
of our government taking action against them.
One of the reasons we are at war is to give
the people of Iraq a government that will
not punish them for what they say or do.
Saddam Hussein is the embodiment of
evil in our world today we need to be
rid of him for the people of Iraq and
the rest of the world. In the future you
will be proud of the fact that you were
part of an effort to rid the world of a
truly evil person.

Know that you always have our full support.

May God bless each of you, your families,

Our prayers and thoughts are with you now and

battle. You are where you are today for three
reasons. First, because you are here to defend

for your your own self respect, because you

are here because you are real Americans and all
real Americans love freedom and are willing to

May God hold you in His hands and provide
comfort and peace to you. You are in my
thoughts and prayers. Semper Fi.

To the men and women serving in our Armed
Forces, Thank you for the courage and
strength you demonstrate every day. You
are our heros. Be safe. We know you will
be successful in the task at hand. You
are in my prayers!!

As the wife of a Citadel graduate who is
a Marine in Iraq, I find great comfort
in the messages posted here. I am
certain that I will visit this site often
over the next several months. The
knowledge that there is such an amazing
display of support from The Citadel Family
is reassuring. It's easy to get scared
and discouraged, but these messages fill
me with pride -- pride for our country,
for our troops, for my husband, and for The
Citadel.

To the friends and families of our service
men and women, you are in my prayers.
Support and strengthen each other.

Let us all continue to pray for our troops
and our leaders.

God Bless our Troops!
God Bless America!

As we pass these trying days, I call to mind that
prayer that we learned by heart as fresGuide and
strengthen those upon whom rests the authority
of government; enlighten with wisdom those who
teach and those who learn; and grant to all of
us that through sound learning and firm
leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy
citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given
to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation
of life and above all to Thee.

hmen: "Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests
the authority of government; enlighten with
wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and
grant to all of us that through sound learning
and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves
worthy citizens of our country, devoted to
truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to
every obligation of life and above all to Thee"
 (The Cadet Prayer).

May God truly guide and strengthen the brave
Citadel men and women serving our country, as
well all of the other heroic men and women
involved in this war. May He be a source of
consolation to the families of the fallen, and
may we be granted the wisdom to live in peace
 and justice.

Benjamin A. Walker of Seymour Johnson AFB, NC (2003.03.31 09:44:12)
Citadel Class/Company: [non-alum]/[non-alum]

Shane is a hero to me. My first cousin, a year
and a half older than me, I cherished the visits
when we were growin up. I have two younger
sisters, and Shane and his brother Sam were like
the brothers that I never had. I am thankful
that my family is close, and all of us cousins
get together as often as we can, even though
many of us are now many miles from Salt Rock, WV.
I had e-mail from Shane while he was waiting for
his ride to the AOR, my unit was still waiting
for deployment orders from Seymour Johnson AFB.
Shane left two weeks before me, to a destination
unknown to me. Shortly after I arrived here in
Qatar, my mother told me that Aunt Judy & Uncle
Joe had received letters that Shane had written
three weeks before. When I asked for his
address, she e-mailed it to me the next day,
Saturday, 22 March. I wrote down his address
about 0800, 10 minutes later, I read another
e-mail, the one that shook my heart forever. I
walked outside, as F-15E's, F-16's and other
coalition aircraft were roaring off towards
Iraq, I prayed that there was a mistake.

I knew in my heart that Shane was gone, yet I
knew he was at the front. He was doing what he
loved, what he lived for. Being a Marine. A
Guardian of his country. A Peacemaker for people
he did not know or owe anything to. A Brother to
Marines all over the world. An example to the
 Marines he led.

Our conversations over the last few years were
always about work. The work that life is about.
A days, a life's work that allows a man to sleep
at night, knowing that you were bettering
yourself so that you could make other's lives
better. Knowing that you earned it. Shane is
selfless, everything he did was for his Corps,
his Country and his Family. He held Mamaw and
Papaw in the highest regard. His respect for
them, and the rest of his family are still an
 inspiration to me.

I see there are many people that his life has
touched. It makes me happy that a part of him
will live on in us, through respect, hard work
and dedication to whatever endeavors we seek.
Shane, my cousin, my brother, I love you, and
your family, I love all that you are and will
 always be.

A special thank you to all who have us in your
prayers, thank you for all the support for our
family. Thank you to all of those who have
fallen before us so that our country is free.

The loss of Lt. Childers focuses many memories of
the sacrifices made by members of the long gray
line. Citadel graduates have, in the service of
 their country, distinguished themselves, their
families, friends and The Citadel in all of the
wars fought by the United States since 1842. As
this generation accepts the responsibility of a
free and grateful nation, God bless all of our

I had the honor of having Shane Childers as a
friend. I didn't know him as well as others, but
I do know that he was truly an outstanding and
motivated Marine and friend. I will always
remember a conversation we had at his graduation
cookout. He was looking forward to leaving The
Citadel and heading off to TBS because that
meant he was going back to the fleet. He
explained to me that he had joined the Marine
Corps to serve our country. While he had
enjoyed his time at The Citadel, he was eager to
get back to the fleet and accomplish his next
goal as a Marine Officer and that was to lead
Marines and continue serving our country. While
it is hard to think about the fact that I will
never see him again to thank him in person, but
I want to thank him for our freedom that he died
protecting. Shane, thank you so much you will
be missed greatly by so many people and never be
 forgotten.
To all of my friends over there, thank you for
fighting for our freedom. I have full confidence
that all of you will accomplish all missions and
return home safe and soon. You are all in my
 prayers and thoughts every day.
To my wonderful husband, you have my full support
and love and I thank you for fighting for our

accomplish all of your missions and return home

The news of Shanes death caught me by
surprise. I remember eating breakfast
and sometimes dinner with him at TBS.
He always smiled and stuck his hand out
for a shake when we crossed paths. He
was so intense, yet mild mannered at the
same time. I used to look at him and
think, "There is an all Marine package."
I can still see his face, his walk, and
his long, lean muscles. He had "great

I just looked at the list of fellow Citadel
 Alumni in combat.
I see so many familiar names and as I read it, I
 can see their faces too.
Some are graduates before me and some are my
 classmates.
To the graduates before me, thank you for your
sacrifice to protect this nation and the
 constitution.
With your struggles, I am confidant to know that
my rights, as well as the rights of innocent
Iraqi, are and will always be protected.
To my classmates, only four years ago, most of us
graduated from our home town high schools.
Now, with your degree in one hand and your
military officer commission in the other, you
are out there, in the desert, fighting.
Thank you.

Do not let the anti-war protesters wail bring
 your spirit down.
For they will never know what it really means to
 follow without fear and for
peace and honor, God and country.
Plus, you are the one protecting the 1st
amendment which allows them to whine and fuss
 about this warhow ironic.

Every day I pray for our troops safe and speedy
 return.
Please take care of yourself and the fellow
 soldiers around you.

 absence.

My heart goes out to the families of soldiers that
are deployed. There are many friends on the list
that I just scrolled through. You are all on my
mind daily. Your willingness to protect the
citizens of the united states is the single
most amazing gift anyone could ever receive.
You have left your family, running water, coca
cola, airconditioning, all things we take for
granted to pursue an enemy that has threatened
our well being. Bravery is not the lack of fear,
bravery is responding to impossible situations
in the face fear. Thank you for facing the fear
for us. If you listen close in the early mornings
in Baghdad you will hear the prayers of all
children, women and men before they lay their
head in a country that has been made safe by
your sacrifice.

Thank you all.

I didn't know Therrel Childers personally, but I
remember his name and his reputation on campus. I know by his reputation
that he was one good man and an excellent Marine. My thoughts go
to his family and friends in their time of mourning. He was a brave man
fighting for a country we all hold so dear. 2nd Lt. Childers was truly a
Citadel man, and he will be remembered.

I hope everyone who visits this page takes the
time to read at least some of the statements here. The reasons we are in Iraq
are plainly evident in these messages of support.

The pains of war have arrived on the doorstep of
The Citadel as we have lost one of our Brothers.
Shane Childers was not only one of the finest
Marines I have ever met, he was indeed a great
person as well. As a MECEP student at the
Citadel I came to know Shane very well. He was
known as Mr Intensity to everyone that met him.
His undaunting will to be the best was ever
present in every task he set out to do. He was
well known and respected throughout The Citadel.
The Marine Corps and the Citadel family has
lost a great man, but the fight is not over yet.

I am currently deployed in support of Operation
Iraqi Freedom. I went to Shane's camp just a
few short weeks ago to pay him a visit. When I
found Shane's tent he was in the middle of a
game of chess with one of his Marines, as usual
honing his tactical and decision making skills.
We talked of old times and about our other
friends that are currently in theater. As we
said our goodbyes I told Shane to stay safe and
that I would be thinking about him, but the
thought never crossed my mind that it would be
our last goodbye. Shane just smiled as he shook
my hand and he walked off into the darkness, off
to prepare himself for what lay ahead.
There are many of my classmates currently
involved in combat operations here. I am sure
that these fine Marines are ready for the
challenges ahead. Everyone can be rest assured
that the honored legacy of the Citadel and The
Citadel MECEP Marines will be upheld in Iraq.
Please keep these Marines in your thoughts and
prayers. 2nd Lt William "Bill" Hefty (Platoon
Commander 2nd Bn/8th Marines, Task Force
Tarawa), 2nd Lt Andrew "Drew" Fanning (Platoon
Commander, 1st Bn/2d Marines, Task Force

Commander, 1st Marine Division), 1st Lt Scott
Stephan (Weapons Company XO, 3rd Bn/2d Marines,

Marines are currently engaged in combat on the

As I heard the reports from the media of our
first engagements in the struggle to free Iraq,
I learned that one of our brothers - 2Lt.
Therrel Childers - was the first to pay the
 ultimate sacrifice.
May the grace of God support and hold his family
during this time. They should know we are
deeply grateful for his honorable service.

Since September 11, I have a greater appreciation
for the role of ElCid in preparing many for
service to our country wheter in direct military
service, or in business leadership. As I see
the list of fellow grads serving directly in the
current military conflict I am filled with
 pride.

Continue the good work, know that our prayers and

First, I would like to offer my heartfelt
condolences to the Childers family and pray that
they will be strengthened by the thought that
Shanes sacrafice will not have been in vain.
Please know that all of us who are, or have been
associated with The Citadel are praying.

My nephew, Jarrod Yates Gupton, is a 1997
Graduate, Tango Company. For four years I was
the "house mom" for his friends. They were
always welcome in my home. The key to my door
was "in the frog". These young men are now
serving their country and putting themselves in
harm's way. Each night I pray for their safe
 return.

If anyone reading this knows the whereabouts of
Shane Fennison (spelling?), he is an Apache

We must keep the faith and remember what we are

My God take his protecting hand and place it upon
all Citadel Alumni and soldiers engaged in the
conflict in Iraq. Citadel Alumni represent the
finest of what America has to offer...we are the
tip of the sword..."the best of the best". We
have a natural inclination to lead and take
charge. My thoughts and prayers go out to the
Childers family during this tragic time. I knew
Lt. Childers and he was a fine young man. I can
say this about him; He loved America, The
Citadel, and The Marine Corps...regretfully, he
was killed in action, but he truly died doing
what he loved. For his sacrafice and the
sacrafice of those before him, we owe our
freedom. God Bless America, God Bless Hotel

finest school on the face of the earth.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news about Lt.
Childers. I offer my sincere condolences to his
family and friends. I know that there are no
words that can assuage the grief that you must
feel at this moment. Please take comfort in
knowing that there is a special seat in heaven
for soldiers that lay down their life for a just
cause. To all of our brothers out there
fighting the good fight; take care brothers.
Fight hard and come back to us safe. You are
truly our heroes. The Citadel produces the
finest gentleman warriors on the earth.
Be safe and godspeed.

"To have power, you must exercise it" The power
of America is the will of it's people to defend
it. We have all shared a common experience at
The Citadel. That experience bonds us through

I am quite humbled as I look at the news and see
the war progressing. It is because I know the
kind of men and women that make up our armed
forces that I have faith that America will
ultimately topple the Iraqi regime. And it
is beacause you are Citadel men and women
that I know how devoted each of you are to
the cause. Without questioning orders, each
of you have been called upon to risk your
life to make another nation free and at
the same time protect our freedom too.

I admire each of you for making the commitment to

Dear Troops,
You need to know that we here at home support you
and wish you the best in your efforts. The
Citadel has a fine tradition in being the first
to sacrafice in war. The preparations mentally
and physically that I have seen my own daughter
go through will come in extremely handy in
combat. The mental tuffness is something that my
daughter Sydney La Quey already possesed but it
had not be tested in the real world. The Citadel
is providing that test. As well as preparing her
to be an officer in the United States Air Force.
In three years she will join you and I couldn't
be more proud. You are all my heros, and if it
weren't for my age I would be there with you in
the Marine Corps. I can shoot very well. (Within
5 inches@400 yards) I wish I could be there with
 you. SL

Dear all of the men and women at war,
I am a seventh grader in Bolivar Ohio and i have
been very nervous about the whole war with Iraq.
It frightens me to know that there are so many of you
out there fighting to keep our freedom. I've been
thinking and I thought that if I was out there i
would probably be to scared to do anything but you
guys do it everyday! It seems so amazing that you
people went to school for so long and now your out
doing what you went for in a matter of probably 2 or 3
year! Well i just wanted to let you all know that
your in my prayers forever and always! I hope that
you fulfill your dreams and always remember that
you have the USA rooting and cheering for you to go
on and do what you know you can!

My support and above all my prayers go out to all
military and especially our brothers that wear
The Ring. I am a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force and
would like nothing less than to be out there with
our brothers in Arms.

The reality of war hits home when you have friends
in the field that you care for and love. And when
one of them looses his life defending this
country, across the corp and every alumni, our
hearts break. But with this said, we, as a
corp, will always have a sense of pride knowing
that our brother went forth and was brave enough
and was man enough to give the ultimate sacrifice.

To Lt. Childers family, I pray God comforts you in
your time of loss. I pray that you or anyone on
this earth never thinks that his death was in vein
of defending the rights and freedoms we all share.

Farewell Brother, I pray God's Grace falls on you.

My prayer is that God will keep our brothers in
His hands and station His angels around each of
them. That He will reach and touch their hearts
in a mighty way that only He can. Lord, bring
them home safe.

God Bless The Citadel, alumni, our military, and
the Class of 2001.

Although I am saddedned by the war, I am

men like my son are there! God Bless each of
you! Please remember that we are pryaing for a

My fondest memory of Lt (then Sgt) Childers was
the time we spent in southern France after my
knob year. He was a pleasure to be around and a
great friend to hang out with. If I ever go back
to the Fitzpatrick Pub in Montpellier, France, I
will raise a pint to him and all of those who
have sacrificed so much. I am headed off to
Korea in May, but I wish I could be in Iraq
right now with a M1A1 platoon doing some damage
on those that threaten the lives of my fellow
 soldiers, the men I love.

As Americans and as people in general we take alot

So I want to say thank you to all of you who make
it possible.

THANK YOU Lt. Childers and all the other brave men
and women who fought before him, fought with him

but rest assure that Therrel's memory will never fade

To all those who wear The Ring, I cannot express

I attended MECEP prep school with Shane. Hearing
about Shane brought this war into reality. Even
though I am also a Second Lieutenant, the media
does an amazing job of taking the reality out of
the war. Americans dying in combat is a harsh
reality that most easily dismiss. Shane gave
his life doing exactly what he wanted to do.
Defending his countries ideals and most
importantly protecting the lives of a platoon of
hard charging young Devil Dogs while
 accomplishing the mission and inflicting
destruction upon the enemy. Shane died so
others didn't have to. Grieve for the loss the
Childers family has suffered, then celebrate the
 life accomplishments, positive impact, and
sacrifices Shane made. You will be missed, not
 forgotten.

My deepest thoughts and prayers go out the family
& friends of 2LT Therrel Shane Childers, USMC.
He was a brave American fighting for the
freedoms of not only the citizens of the United
States of America, but also for the freedoms
that everyone on the planet deserve. At this
difficult time in the world, we need to support
all of our soldiers from every country that have
accepted the challenge of defeating evil in this
world. Many people in the USA and around the
world will try to say that this war is not
needed; but they need to take a step back &
think about the freedoms that they experience
every day in there lives. These freedoms are
not freely given out just because we are in the
USA. Many & many brave soldiers gave the
ultimate sacrifice for this country to be free.
I am eternally grateful to each of them. May
God continue to bless the United States of
America. Also, I want to thank all of the
service men & women who are currently serving or
have served in times gone by. We owe you our
 freedoms. Thank you!

I am an Arab '92 graduate of The Citadel and I am also Iraqi.
Watching the bombardment of my country creates mixed feelings and
emotions. But there are certain things of which I am sure. Saddam is
an evil tyrant that must be removed not only from power but from
this earth. Putting politics aside it sickens me to see the US POW's
being paraded in front of the cameras for all to see, my heart goes
out to their families and I pray for their safe return to their
homes. The Iraqi regime has a terrible track record with POW's
therefore I fear for their safety. The US Army has an excellent and
humane track record with regards to POW's so I do not fear for the
well being of our POW's, in fact I am glad that they are out of
harms way and are being well cared for. I blame the Iraqi regime
for all the casulaties in this war and each casulty, whether it be
American, British or Iraqi, breaks my heart.

I remember fondly my time at The Citadel during the last Gulf War. I
was treated like a brother by all the other cadets who were always
concerned about my safety and well being around town. They were very
understanding of my mixed emotions and very supportive at times when
locals in Charleston decided to speak openly against Iraq in
general. In short they were decent human beings.

I only hope that my fellow alumni, cadets and Americans can
understand, not excuse, why many of my fellow Arabs have lost that
humanity. The Arab world has had to deal with repressive
governments, Israeli abuse of Palestine and the Palestinian people,
past western interference in Arab politics which most of the times
supported the repressive governments and prolonged the peoples
suffering. This is the reason Arabs find it very hard to support
 anything that the West does.

I spent much of my life in the west, between the US & UK and I choose
to not hate and to be optimistic. I choose to believe that the US is
here to help the Iraqi people. I am not a politician and I do not
judge a people by their governments actions. I lived in America for
4 years while at The Citadel and I know that a non American Arab in
America has more rights & freedoms than all the Arabs in their
respective countries. I envy your freedom and hope we will soon have
a taste of it thanks to the efforts of your brave soldiers and the
brave Iraqi's and Arabs who are willing to open their eyes and to
take a stand against tyranny and evil.

My condolences to the family of Therrel Shane Childers. I pray that
Therrel's sacrifice is not in vain.

I pray for peace and better understanding between our poeples,
religons and governments. I pray we rediscover our humanity and
those who have it don't lose theirs in all this madness.

God Bless The Citadel

As the father of two Marines and the father-in-law of a third who are
in my thoughts at all times,I console myself with the knowledge that
they are in the best of company.Take care of yourself and your
troops and come home to us safely and soon. Semper Fi!

The loss of 2nd Lt. Shane Childers is devastating to his family, his
friends, and The Corps. As Marine Security Guards in Geneva,
Switzerland in 1993 and 94, Shane (then Sgt. Childers) and I became
good friends. We worked hard, trained hard, and lived hard. We
each completed our first triathlon together in Lake Geneva--Shane
beat me of course. He was in amazing physical shape. We trained a
lot together and he always seemed to edge me out.

But beyond his physical accomplishments, Shane was a true leader of
Marines--the most motivated, hard-chargin' Devil Dog I have known.
The Corps' ranks are emptier today, but the streets we guard in
Heaven's Scenes just gained an outstanding platoon commander.

I was saddened to hear the news of Lt. Shane Childers death. As a
member of the Class of 2001, I have many classmantes in the Gulf. I
am tremendously proud of all of them and grateful to know all of
them. Hopefully, The Citadel will not have to post another message
about another one of her fallen sons. My thoughts and prayers are
 with you boys!

 you.

I was shocked and deeply saddened when I learned of Lt. Childers
death. I attended The Citadel with him in the MECEP program for 3
years. Shane, as many of us called him was one of our go to guys
because he could always be depended on. Whether it was training or
helping you move some furniture at your house, Shane would be there
 for you.

In my 9 years in the Corps, I have served with some fine Marines.
Very few of them could hold a candle to Shane. Not only did he
teach me more about the Corps, he taught me more about myself.

Shane I Love You Brother.

First, let me extend my condolences to the family and friends of
Marine Lt. T. Childers who recently made the ultimate sacrifice in
the service of our nation. I think I can safely say that every
member of our long gray line mourns with you.

Secondly, upon hearing of the death of Lt. Childers, I paused to
reflect upon what we learned at The Citadel, and which accounts for
why so many of our graduates serve in harms way at the "tip of the
spear". We learned to serve by example at the forefront. We did
not learn to shirk difficulty and hardship. We learned to have to
have courage in the face of difficulty, and learned to honor our
nation, our school, our God, and our families. It is little wonder
then that so many Citadel grads serve in the most dangerous roles-
Seals, Special Forces, Ranger, Airborne, Infantry, Armor, Marines,
combat pilots. Some of my classmates are likely flying combat
missions as I write this. For serving at the forefront, our
graduates have paid a price. In the last 20 years alone our
graduates have made the ultimate sacrifice in Grenada, Beirut, and
the 1990 Gulf War. Where there is danger, there will be Citadel
graduates in the forefront of the fray. Lt. Childers was one of
those graduates. I salute Marine Lt. Childers for his courage and
devotion to his Corp and country. His service was in the finest
tradition of the long gray line of Citadel alumni. God bless all of
you who serve. May you do so with honor and courage. I salute you
all and pray for your safe return.

Respectfully

Shane and I along with others went through MECEP and OCS here
together at The Citadel. You can't exagerrate about Shane! He was
one of the finest Marines I have ever known and a great friend. His
passing is a testament to the legacy of the Corps. The first
casualty as a result of enemy fire was a Marine Officer. You don't
get killed in combat hanging out in the back. Shane made the
ultimate sacrfice because he was leading from the front. He left
some very large shoes to fill and he will be sorely missed.

From all of us in the Greater Atlanta Citadel Club, may God bless and
keep those Citadel graduates fighting in Iraq and Afganistan safe
unto Him. Please know that you are in our daily prayers.

Your mission is clear and you have a President who says what he means
and means what he says. You are freeing a nation from a tyrant and
securing our nation's peace. Because of your commitment and
sacrifice, freedom will come to those who have suffered for so long
and peace in the Middle East will move closer to becoming a
 reality.

God bless and keep you.

To all of you serving, know that you are in the thoughts and prayers
of all Citadel Graduates. We know that you are the most dedicated,
disciplined, and above all, loyal men and women the country has to
offer. Many times throughout your cadet careers you were challenged
mentally and physically. You welcomed those challenges and became
better people because of the hardship. There is no doubt that the
execution of your duties to God and the United States of America
will be swift and efficient. Godspeed and safety to you. Know that
we swell with pride for our school and our country for your
 unconditional reverence to duty.

I would like to send my most heartfelt thanks to each and every one
of those who serve. I can't explain how much you are appreciated for
your bravery, strong will and sacrifice. Not just anyone is willing
to lay their life on the line for the sake of others, for this takes
a true man/woman. I realize that what you do isn't easy, but always
know that you have the undying support of fellow Americans like
myself and of the Lord. I continue to keep all of you in my thoughts
and prayers and know that God will provide a shield of protection
amongst all of you. God Bless all of you...you are my heroes!!!

Therrel Shane Childers was my first cousin, but countless times I
have felt and expressed that he was more like my own brother. Shane
was always there for me, for our family and most of all for his men
& country. I visited Shane at the Citadel in the Winter of
'99 and also for his commissioning in June of 2001.

To his friends who made my sister and me feel like they were our
family too, our thoughts and prayers are with you, wherever you may
be. I pray that God brings you safely home.

Our family is devastated over our loss, but we continue to think of
the rest of the men and women who are in various parts of the world,
making it better for all of us. My brother serves in the Air Force
and is deployed. Shane's brother-in-law in the Army. Shane's cousin
in the Navy is also deployed. His father and brother who served in
the Navy. Our grandfather who served in the Army.

My heart aches that Shane will not be returning to us to visit, but
returning to rest. He was doing what he loved the most. Although he
traveled the world and lived in so many differnt places, he told us
that he didn't really have a home, but we know the Marine Corps
was his home and his family, beyond ours.

I wrote a letter to Shane on Sunday, March 16th. I finally got it
into the mailbox on Tuesday and on Thursday, it was returned to me
because I had left off the last line of the address. I mailed it
once again on Friday. Saturday, I learned of his death and realize,
that yet again, it will not be read by him.

Shane, you are a hero to me, to our family and our country. You did
so much for me. You encouraged me to stop worrying and just do
whatever it was that needed to be done to make me happy. Take
action. Everywhere I turn, I have a memory of you. Pictures, the
many handed down t-shirts from The Citadel, triathalons, Nairobi,
Jakarta, etc; my first ski trip, running in the snow and 20 degree
weather in the dead of winter, my college graduation... You were
always here with us when you had the chance. Even if it was for one
day, you would drive 8 hours here and 8 hours home for us. I pray
for your brothers and sisters in arms. I know that you will be with
us forever in spirit, but I admit I am selfish, I want you here
physically. God bless you!! I love you!!

I HAVE ALWAYS HAD MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT CALLING PEOPLE HEROS AND NEVER
 KNEW IF IT WAS APPROPRIATE.

NONE OF YOU KNOW A YOUNG MAN NAMED SHANE CHILDERS SO I WANT TO TELL
 YOU MORE ABOUT HIM.

SHANE GRADUATED FROM GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL AND JOINED THE MARINES
AFTER TRAVELING THE WORLD WITH HIS DAD'S 20 YEAR MILITARY CAREER.
SHANE LOVED THE MARINES AND LOVED HIS COUNTRY. SHANE WAS ALWAYS THE
SHINING LIGHT OF EVERY FAMILY GETOGETHER BECAUSE HE SHOWED SO MUCH
LOVE TO EVERY ONE HE MISSED.

SHANE WAS A LITTLE BROTHER TO MY BROTHER AND I AND ANOTHER SON TO
GUIDE DOWN THE RIGHT PATH TO MY MOM AND DAD AFTER MY BROTHER AND I
LEFT THE NEST. ABOUT 4 1/2 YERS AGO, SHANE DROVE FROM CALIFORNIA TO
MEMPHIS ON HIS WAY TO THE CITADEL TO TAKE HIS CAREER TO THE NEXT
LEVEL. HE STOPPED AND HAD DINNER WITH OUR FAMILY AND VISITED AND
THEN WENT ON TO HIS NEXT ADVENTURE.

HE GRADUATED OVER A YEAR AGO AND WAS READY FOR THE NEXT STEP. HIS
NEXT STEP WAS LEADING ONE OF OUR OF MARINE DIVISIONS THAT WAS
 FREEING IRAQ FROM THE DICTATORSHIP.

2ND LUETINANT SHANE CHILDERS UNITED STATES MARINE CORP. WAS THE FIRST
GROUND CASUALITY OF OPERATION FREE IRAQ AND WE WILL ALWAYS MISS OUR
COUSIN, OUR LITTLE BROTHER AND MY HERO. I LOVE YOU SHANE

Hello,
I am a Marine 2ndLt going through pilot training in Pensacola FL. I
was deeply upset when I heard that Therrel Childers had died in Iraq.
I went to OCS with him, and he was at the Infantry Officer's Course
in Quantico when I was at The Basic School. He was one of the most
dedicated Marines I have ever met. The Corps has lost a damn fine
Marine. My prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

To all who serve,

I am eternally grateful for the fighting forces of our country for
ensuring the peace and prosperity for not only our country but for
the world in which we all live. In the words of Stonewall Jackson -
There is no greater duty than to one's home - This duty which our
miltary has is preserving not only our safety, but that of our
children and grandchildren. I look forward to joining you, upon
graduation, in serving in our military. Godspeed.

God Bless,

It really feels strange to watch the war on the TV and not be there.
Not only am I not there, I have a classmate with a son there. Pray
that this war ends soon. Pray for our soldiers, sailors, airmen,
marines, coasties and civilians that are protecting freedom for the
world. Pray for the innocent Iraqis that they may understand why
 this is occuring.

Throughout The Citadel's 160-year history, the military college has
produced scores of graduates who have selflessly served their
country, often giving their lives, to protect our freedom and the
freedom of our allies. As we enter into this conflict in Iraq, we
are proud to recognize our cadets and graduates continuing that
 tradition.
